Tenuta Matrico: A family story
From Grandfather Totu to the present day, over a century of history preserved by a single family
Salento Roots
Tenuta Matrico is more than just a farm: it is the story of a family that has lived and cherished its land with love and dedication for over a century.
It all began in the late 19th century with Grandfather ("Nonnu") Totu, who walked the countryside daily with soil on his hands and the breeze of Otranto in his eyes. He planted the very first olive trees upon which the estate’s history was built. His son Carmelo took up the mantle, continuing to cultivate, prune, and safeguard a family heritage rooted in quiet, genuine hard work.
Then came Giovanni, joined today by his wife Clara and their daughters Laura and Alessandra.
Stronger Than Time
We defied Xylella by planting 5,000 new olive trees, bringing you an artisanal extra virgin olive oil that embodies pure resilience.
Even when all seemed lost and Xylella devastated much of Salento's olive groves, the Caggese family refused to give up. Choosing to believe in tradition once more, they replanted 5,000 new resistant olive trees. Every bottle tells a story of resilience and passion—one deeply rooted in authentic Salento, built upon subtle yet meaningful gestures, daily care, and respect for nature. Our processing is truly artisanal: rapid harvesting, immediate milling, and zero compromise on quality. This oil is born within the family, is part of the family, and holds that rich heritage in every single drop. Perhaps that is why its flavor speaks so clearly of home.
